an intravital microscope and a computer, allows real-time measurement
of red blood cell velocities in microvessels. Using vessel geometric factors,
this velocity can then be used to calculate a blood shear rate. The system
works by correlating two time-shifted signals from a pair of photodiodes
placed in line with the direction of blood flow on a projected image of
a microvessel. This "dual-slit" technique has a long history in the field
of microcirculation.
